Revenge has a name

Chloe Moretz;Julianne Moore

Carrie (18+)  – Starring Chloë Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore, directed by Kimberly Peirce

Based on the 1974 novel by Stephen King, this film adaptation reimagines the story of Carrie White, a 17-year-old outcast who discovers she has telekinesis.

Cinema fans will notice a few differences in this remake of the 1976 version, most notably the emphasis on Carrie’s bullying aggravated by social media.

Carrie’s mother, Margaret (Moore) receives more screen time as the tumultuous mother-daughter relationship is played out. A significant influence on her daughter’s social ineptness, Margaret’s own issues are addressed from the opening scene.

Unsure of her protruding stomach, Margaret nearly murders Carrie at birth and manages to pass on her self-loathing and feelings of worthlessness to her daughter. Carrie’s life is anything but normal as her deeply religious mother persistently locks her in a ‘prayer closet’ to free her of her sins.

But when an embarrassing incident at school goes viral, Carrie discovers she has the ability to move objects, a power her mother believes comes from the devil.

When Carrie is asked to the prom by a popular boy, her mother refuses to let her attend but Carrie uses her powers against her. On the night of the prom, high school antics cause Carrie to retaliate, unleashing her powers on the unsuspecting town.

Carrie hits cinemas this Thursday 28th November.
