Ramadan etiquette

The rule of thumb is that a Muslim can eat a pre-fast meal (‘suhoor’) before dawn but must stop at the dawn call to prayer.

They would not eat anything else all day until after the evening prayer, at which point they will have a meal called b‘iftar’ – which is why many restaurants serve iftar buffets.

For non-Muslims, the UAE’s laws ban eating and drinking in public during Ramadan. In practice this is often interpreted as a prohibition on eating and drinking within the sight of Muslims, so many employers and hotels provide special rooms for those that are not fasting.

Some restaurants and other F&B outlets are closed during Ramadan.

Ramadan Dos and Dont's

DO remember to dress conservatively; keep shoulders covered and skirt lengths below the knee.
DO be mindful around others; refrain from offensive language and remember that those fasting may suffer from fatigue.
DO accept an invitation to join a local iftar or suhour.

DON'T turn music up. During the month of Ramadan, public places will not play music.
DON'T eat, drink, smoke or chew gum in public.
DON'T forget to wish others Ramadan Kareem
