Sony’s new Action Cam is gearing up to take on the GoPro

focusonalltheaction01

With every splash, crash, tumble and turn, we love to relive some of our favourite, if not embarrassing sporting moments. So instead of describing it, why not watch it?

Despite the city starting to heat up there are still some ardent adrenalin junkies looking for their next thrill in the city. For some residents however, the thought of mountain biking or dune-bashing just doesn’t appeal. Especially not in 40+ degree heat. Yet these hardcore go-getters can film their antics with the new Sony Action Cam and show not only their friends, but the world just what they are missing!

The Sony Action Cam with enabled WiFi is the new sports toy. We all know about the GoPro Hero series of cameras, so when in comes to filming those extreme experiences, how does the Sony compare?

The Action Cam is an impressive piece of kit weighing only 90g and films in several different resolutions to suit varied needs such as Full HD (1920×1080 30p), STD HD (1280×720, 30p) and SD VGA (640×480, 30p). The GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition (top of their range) also films in the above resolutions but weighs 94g. Not much of a difference, but when you include the batteries, housing and other add-ons, the weight adds up.

The Action Cam also features Sony’s hallmark SteadyShot image stabilisation technology, which compensates for greater degrees of camera shake to deliver stunningly smooth video no matter how tough the conditions. In addition, the innovative three-way Shake-Cancelling adds electronic roll stability for even smoother video capture.

But here’s what we really like, its USP. The camera’s built-in WiFi allows users to instantly share their content to a smartphone. Additionally, WiFi-enabled mobile phones and tablets can pull movies and photos from the Action Cam without requiring a special cable. Once copied, the recorded content can be uploaded or shared via email or social media through connecting with an available 3G or 4G cellular network. Something the GoPros cannot.

Both cameras have a variety of mounts, casings and filming modes. This has almost become the foundation of sports cameras on the market today. Yet, Sony is allowing you to connect to the world that one step quicker. Here at Abu Dhabi Week we are big fans of the GoPro range, yet this new piece of kit has thrown a spanner in the works. Watch out GoPro, you may not be a hero for much longer…

Many people like to watch music videos on their phones, tablets or computers. More often than not, we tend to use YouTube. Whether it’s official music videos or upcoming artists, this site/app works. However there’s a new kid on the block, Music Tube.

But what makes this different from YouTube? Well, you can save videos and watch them at later date, without needing an internet connection! Downloads are quick and the quality is just as impressive. The app is free aswell.
