Edible art

Sent on a mission to review a fine-dining restaurant; we booked a table at Quest.

No matter how many times we walk through the doors of Jumeirah at Etihad Towers we never fail to be impressed by the sight of the stunningly stylish foyer with its twinkling chandeliers, marble floors and slanted floor-to-ceiling windows. Upstairs on floor 63, Quest, is equally as chic.

We chose a table in the corner with a panoramic view of the city. The menu featured a combination of Chinese, Japanese and Malaysian dishes; expected dishes such as sweet and sour prawns or wok-fried noodles, in addition to more unusual items. We ordered wok-seared pink snapper followed by Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

The New Zealand pink snapper portion was surprisingly large. From past experience we noticed that fine-dining restaurant portions tend to be small – not here.

The fish was lightly battered, drenched in a syrupy Indonesian sauce and served with steamed bok choy. The mild chilli, smoky sauce was a delicious accompaniment
to the very light fishy taste of the pink snapper.

Our dessert, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, was equally as tasty. The sweet was made up of three components: cereal, a croissant and café latte. We picked up our mini-cereal packet and put it into the ‘bowl,’ which turned out to be strawberry consommé. We watched as our cereal dissolved before enjoying this zingy, sweet treat.

After that it was time for a sip of our café latte. Served in a glass coffee cup it looked identical to a café latte, we laughed when we realised it wasn’t actually a drink; the coffee part was ice-cream with hot foam on top.

We asked chef Benjamin Whatt to explain how the ice-cream didn’t melt under the heat of the hot foam. “It’s a secret how it works and that’s part of the fun of dining at Quest. Many of our menu items are edible art and you never know what to expect.”
