Your Abu Dhabi - Dedra Thornton

Teacher Dedra Thornton is originally from the United States, but has been living in Abu Dhabi for the past six months. Abu Dhabi Week asked her what five things she likes best about living in capital and here’s what she had to say.

Culture

The culture and the importance of family is very strong here in the UAE. In Abu Dhabi they take pride in their traditions and history. This place is warm and friendly just like the people, which is similar to my foundation back home.

Landscape

Even though it is mostly desert, there can be such variation in the landscape within the various Emirates. Although most don’t, I love the heat and constant sunshine along with daily gorgeous sunrises and sunsets on my way to and from work - priceless! The Corniche and amazing architecture are always wonderful to experience.

Things to do

The capital always has a multitude of interesting things to do and see weekly. There is never enough time to see or do it all! I love the cool eclectic and ethnic cafés that boast great atmospheres, friendly people offering healthy, delicious foods and drinks. The athletic events and venues are top notch and never leave me bored either!

The Fairmont Bab Al Bahr

It was my first home here and I made some great friends there. The service, food and ambiance are second to none. Also the pool and beach are phenomenal with a great view of the Grand Mosque – the most spectacular and peaceful place in Abu Dhabi. Each time I visit I discover something different. The library and architecture are great treasures waiting to be discovered.

Cultural melting pot

Abu Dhabi is truly a cultural melting pot made of so many nationalities. How amazing to see various nationalities and cultures coexisting while still maintaining the essence of the UAE. What a nice balance. I came here to have an experience and discover new things and can’t wait until my family can come to share in the experience!
