Your Abu Dhabi - Chris Morton

Chris Morton is 35 years old and has lived in Abu Dhabi for about five years. Together with his wife, he moved to Abu Dhabi from Cardiff in Wales and works as a mechanical engineer in the oil industry. Abu Dhabi Week asked Chris what are the five things he likes most about living in Abu Dhabi.

The weather

I’ll get the most obvious one out of the way first. If there’s one thing that you can virtually take for granted in Abu Dhabi, it’s the weather. Glorious year round sunshine with virtually no rain – it’s a far cry from what I’m used to in Wales! Add in the fantastic selection of beaches and you really can’t go wrong – absolutely tan-tastic.

The people

One of the first things that struck me about the capital – and continues to enchant me – is the sheer diversity and friendliness of the people here. It’s fantastic to be able to meet and work with people from all over the world, to learn about different cultures and see things from a different perspective. I know it’s a bit of a cliché, but Abu Dhabi really is an ethnic melting pot.

The architecture

One of my main passions is architecture and although Abu Dhabi is still a developing city there are so many beautiful buildings here. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is absolutely stunning, inside and out, and then there’s Emirate’s Palace, the leaning tower and the ‘Smartie’ building (Aldar’s headquarters).

The food

Whatever type of food you like, you’re sure to be able to find it here. There is a huge variety of cuisines in all styles from every corner of the world and to suit any budget, from small independent authentic eateries and cafes to gourmet dining and upmarket five-star restaurants, Abu Dhabi has it all.

Yas Island

Living off the island in Al Reef you might think it’s a little isolated but there’s no chance of that with Yas Island just five minutes down the road. From the Grand Prix, Ferrari World and the golf course to the numerous hotels, restaurants and concerts, there’s always something to do. And with even more developments in the pipeline, such as the waterpark and public beach, it’s only going to get better.

Have your say
