Road rage

The act of driving has turned from a once relatively simple, calm thing to do and into a frustrating, blood boiling terror.

With the seemingly endless road works resulting in closed roads and one lane detour routes, some drivers simply can’t help but add to the irritation.

For one, indicators and brakes are some of the many useful components of a car that are never used by the road-rage obsessed drivers that rule the roads: putting it bluntly, if you’re going to pull out in front of me, use your indicator, or don’t drive. It’s not just frustrating – it’s dangerous.

Although a lack of use of car parts is a main contribution to the percentage of today’s angry drivers, another contributor to blood pressure levels and patience appears to be the rush hour drive. How is it possible for every citizen of Abu Dhabi to be driving at the same time? One minute the traffic is flowing smoothly, and the next the roads are congested and there aren’t enough lanes for everyone to go anywhere. I feel like I’m going mad in the hours I spend stationary: the sight of people chatting on their phones and ignoring the change of traffic lights or a slight movement in their lane makes me want to scream. Yes, you’re probably calling loved ones to let them know you’re running late, but how about saving everyone a late arrival and getting off the phone and concentrating on the road ahead.

And during those numerous hours I’ve spent waiting for the traffic to start moving again, I’ve noticed top of the range, super expensive Bugatti’s, Lamborghini’s, Ferrari’s and a whole variety of other sports cars with the extra accessory of a fence or lamp post impaling the bonnet. If you want to look cool driving some of the best cars in the world, don’t drive it through a fence, it just isn’t made for doing that without the consequence of damage: you can’t speed through traffic that isn’t moving – it just doesn’t work.

Despite the grievances that torment my daily drive, I’m learning that I need to relax and go with it, because even though there may be crashes and a lot of detours along the way, I can just be thankful that I get to my destination safely – even if it does take me three hours in that rush hour.
