Have you ever been in one of those riveting movies where you just can’t look away? The leading man is about to kiss the leading lady and you’re so into it ... and then someone’s phone goes off. You’ve missed the moment and your attention has completely been distracted from the film. Worse still, the phone culprit didn’t only forget to switch their phone off, but they’ve decided to go ahead and have a conversation about how they’re at the cinema, can you call them back later? Could they not have waited to tell the caller this after the movie had finished?
Obviously not, so that’s why the whole audience gets to listen to their conversation, rather than the film. Great.
Is it just me, or does every person in Abu Dhabi now seem to own some kind of mobile phone? In the mall the other day, I saw what seemed to be an eight year-old holding the latest business phone. Oh and that’s not all – it was gold and silver plated, naturally. It looked like something lost from the set of Star Wars rather than more appropriately from a child’s toy store.
Technology is also a phone phobia of mine. I was happy when I was just able to call and text someone, but it now seems I can open word documents (rather than perhaps the more sensible option – like on a computer, perhaps?) use a compass on my phone and video call as well. I don’t know about you, but I don’t feel the need to get all dressed up and looking nice for a simple phone call. If I wanted to get dressed up, I would just go out and meet the person!
And then there’s the type of person who seemingly can’t be without their phone for a single second – and so use it while driving. Witnessing someone speeding along at twice the speed limit is scary enough, but on a mobile phone as well? Slightly too dangerous for my liking.
It seems to be that no matter what, mobile phones are here to stay. They may control the technology world at the moment, but please, for your own sanity, don’t let them control your world as well.
