1. Jones the Grocer: A gourmet deli gone wild, Jones the Grocer is a favourite of Australians – and others less familiar to the franchise – all over the capital. Nothing says “let’s have a treat” like a wagyu burger for lunch. Hard to find in the city block between 2nd and 4th and between 13th and 15th, Jones is worth the search.

2. THE One cafe: With its ever changing menu of South African specialities and unique light soups and salads, THE One offers a lovely lunch in a gorgeous setting. The traffic in Khalidiya isn’t too bad, but the parking is unpredictable.  02 681 6500.

3. Cafe 37: Anyone working on the mainland should check out this unique venue. Overlooking the 9th and 18th greens at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club, this elegant venue draws business diners from miles around. Once it’s too hot to enjoy the terrace, check out the sports on TV over an international menu, or try one of their other outlets, including 1001 Nights and the Asian Bistro and Sushi Bar. 02 558 8990.

4. 49ers: The steaks at this old favourite are perhaps the best value for money in town. Though they open at noon, 49ers at the Dana Hotel opposite Le Meridien Hotel is almost completely dead in the middle of the day, so you can enjoy a great steak in peace. Be sure to take a taxi because parking is wretched. 02 645 5000.

5. Amici: Got a client you really need to impress? You can hardly go wrong with the ever so spectacular Yas Hotel. While the hearty Italian food on offer at Amici is sure to satisfy, the prices will reassure your business partners that you’re no fool easily parted with money. 02 656 0000.
