Kairali Ayurvedic Health Spa at Mourouj Hotel Apartments - Ayurvedic massage

Massage the traditional way

So what’s the deal?

With so many swish new spa treatments popping up, it’s nice to be reminded of one that’s been around for centuries – ayurvedic massage. If you want it done the way they do in India, the place to go is Kairali Ayurvedic Health Spa at Mourouj Hotel Apartments.

Once undressed and wrapped up in a towel, we first sit on a stool. The temperature is literally baking hot outside and all that heat and sun have done a number on our skin and hair, so our therapist begins the treatment by pouring a stream of scented oil directly on our head.

If we were getting a traditional Dhara treatment, this stream of medicated oil would continue for the remainder of the treatment – instead we’ve opted for the Abhyangam Relaxation and Rejuvenation Massage, so our therapist applies the oil to our whole body.

Lubricated from head to toe and glistening like a Roman gladiator, we’re directed to climb onto the wooden massage table where our therapist rubs in the medicated oil over our entire body with a level of pressure that teeters the tightrope between pleasant and painful.

The vigorous rub down does the trick, though, and we slide off the table 45 minutes later feeling – as promised – both relaxed and rejuvenated. Massage complete, it’s off for a session in the steam room followed by a thorough shower.

Why go?

Our good hair day was thoroughly destroyed within the first five seconds of this comprehensive treatment, but our skin and hair were silky soft and moisturised.

And why not?

In traditional style, you’ll be directed to wear a paper apron that will be fashioned into knickers which will leave you 99 percent naked for 100 percent of the treatment – those with privacy issues may feel a little exposed.
