Muscles, man

It was something that could not be put off any longer.
After a lifetime of the bad posture, stress and exertion that goes with being a journalist, it would be fair to say that the time had come to definitely do something about it. But where to go? Osteopaths and sports injury centres seemed too drastic, mere massage a little too weak.
Then came with the opportunity to visit MAN/AGE Luxury Men’s Spa. Everything that the modern male required to improve his appearance and well-being was on offer, from a haircut and a full range of facial treatments to Swedish Aroma-luxe Massage and Japanese Shiatsu dry massage.
The treatment which caught my attention was Deep Tissue Massage, intensive therapy that is especially helpful for tense and contracted areas such as the neck, the lower back, and the shoulders. Here, the therapist breaks down rigid muscle tension to relieve pain and restore normal movement.
With more than a little trepidation I am greeted warmly by Marco at the MAN/ AGE spa in Marina Mall. A warren of dark, intimate corridors lead to individual rooms for speciality treatments, each containing a therapist eager to provide expert advice (I am reminded by Marco that each customer for the facial receives a free skin consultation to ensure that they are being given the correct treatment).
Marco introduces me to Larry, the man who I suspect is going to be my tormentor. He invites me to relax, and having to lie down in a darkened room carries a whole new meaning. The lights are lowered, the door is locked shut; suddenly Larry launches himself into his work. Face down on the massage table, I am aware of Larry kneeling over my helpless form, attacking every knot in my back, neck and legs with fingers and elbows. He is finding knots in muscles where I didn’t even realise I had muscles. I imagine his sly smirk as he pummels away.
Hot towels are laid on my back and legs to help relax the muscles before Larry’s next onslaught, and he continues to grind, pound and fold my limbs while constantly enquiring whether the pressure is too much.
Larry is nothing if not thorough, and no one can deny that he puts a lot of effort into his work (if the perspiration on his face is anything to go by). Yet amazingly the 90 minute session is over – and I’m still in one piece, and feeling good. Despite the pummelling, I am intact and relaxed.
After a shower and tea served in the room, I’m ready to face the world again, with hopefully a more relaxed spring in my step.
A note on the menu explains that deep tissue massage can result in a client feeling a little “sore” for a few days afterwards. No exaggeration there then!
But after being put through the MAN/ AGE mangle I can honestly report that one comes out with a feeling of well being and relaxation and certainly feeling fitter than when I went in.

The spa recommends two deep tissue massages each month in order to reap the maximum benefit. Curiously, I find myself looking forward to the next session.
