90-minute Signature Massage

Going underground

The Beach Rotana’s lobby is always such a hive of activity that you might be forgiven for missing the entrance to Zen the Spa, discreetly tucked away opposite the Rodeo Grill.

We always like to take the lift down, even though it’s only one flight of stairs to the reception area. There’s something about descending into the warm, welcoming atmosphere of the spa that is instantly relaxing.

Whisked through to the changing area, we pop on our robe and we’re soon encased in a warm towel on one of the relaxation beds in the lounge, magazine and a hot cup of green tea in hand.

We arrived for our treatment in a bit of a state, tired and emotional from a painful physio session on an injured knee. Our therapist immediately responded to this, choosing a blend of natural oils intended to be uplifting as well as soothing.

Preferring a firm massage, we’re often disappointed by the lack of attention paid to more delicate areas of the body by therapists who are obviously keen to finish the treatment. Our therapist Annie put them all to shame, pummeling out the stubborn knots in our shoulders while gently massaging some soothing tiger balm into our swollen knee. Our own mum couldn’t have done a better job of making us feel better.

The Signature Massage combines several massage techniques, from the long, strong strokes of the Balinese to the more concentrated pressure of Swedish and Shiatsu schools. Finishing off with some stretching more akin to a Thai massage, the overall effect is both exhilarating and deeply relaxing. This would be a perfect massage for someone who has just had a long journey as it really limbers you up.
