Beach Yoga

So what’s the deal?

What’s the best way to get some fresh air and reboot your body and soul at the same time? Try a session of yoga on the beach.

Yoga is an excellent form of exercise for just about everyone. It increases flexibility, exercises tendons and ligaments, massages the organs and tones the muscles. The practice of yoga also acts as a sort of physical meditation, calming the mind and reducing stress. Whether you’re a man or a woman, an adult or a child, an utterly unfit couch potato or a hyper fit athlete, you’re likely to gain some benefit from trying yoga.

This particular class is unique in that it’s conducted outside – even though the evening traffic along the Corniche was only a few metres away, no one seemed to notice. We were all too busy focusing on our breathing and muscles, soaking in the occasional glance of the stars over our heads and the sound of the waves lapping against the shore.

Why go?

Whatever worries are on your mind when you get there won’t seem so bad once you’ve taken the time to stretch, strengthen and balance your body. Even better, taking the time to concentrate on your body in a restful natural environment will wipe your mental slate clean.

And why not?

Most of our fellow classmates seemed to follow right along with the exotic yoga lingo our teacher used to transition from one pose to the next. If you’re new to yoga, let your instructor know before the class begins so she can explain the poses in terms you’ll understand.

What? Beach yoga
Where? A gazebo on the Corniche Family Beach near Gate 2
The class: A session of mindful yoga that focuses on holding poses and quieting the mind
Cost: AED 50 for the class plus AED 10 for entry to the beach
We say: The perfect way to relish some early morning sunshine or a gorgeous breezy evening
