The swanky Silkor villa in Khalidiya is home to a number of highly skilled and trained dermatologists, medical professionals and facial therapists offering a wide range of services.

Not being the most hirsute member of the Abu Dhabi Week team, we’re a little intrigued – and nervous – to find out what laser hair removal has to offer the more follicly-challenged.

So what's the deal?
A pre-treatment consultation explains how hair grows in three cycles (growth, dormant and shedding); laser removal is most effective during the growth cycle and works better the darker and thicker the hair. The laser targets the follicle itself and destroys its ability to re-grow without damaging delicate pores and skin structures. And the wispy hair around the bottom of our neck is the ideal candidate, apparently.

In the treatment room, while donning protective shades, a cooling gel is applied and the laser removal machine hums into life. We brace ourselves as the technician wields the hoover-like attachment and...less than ten minutes later it’s all over. Cold air is blown continuously onto the skin as the laser pulses up and down the area – there is a faint tingling sensation and a slight stinging warmth but nothing more.

Why go?
Laser hair removal offers a fast, permanent way to eradicate the need for shaving, waxing and tweezing – and apart from a little redness, there’s really no fuss involved. A few return treatments are required at six to eight week intervals for the baby smooth skin to be ensured, but the prospect no longer holds any fear for us.

Why not?
We’re struggling to think of any reasons not to recommend this treatment. Although some areas are obviously more sensitive than others, the benefits are surely worth a little mild discomfort.

What? Laser hair removal
