Hair today, gone today

hairtodaySo what’s the deal?
You can tell you’re getting older when it seems like a good idea to spend more money on your appearance. So when the opportunity to try out a laser treatment cropped up, we were keen to give it a go – for research purposes as much as anything else.

The session at Silkor begins with a consultation with a personal technician in the office before you’re taken upstairs to the treatment room.

After a very thorough explanation of what will happen during and after the procedure, the technician draws around the target area and then grids it in red pencil so she can do each section in turn. A gel is spread across the grid before the lasering begins.

We plumped for the most sensitive area for laser treatment and we can’t say it didn’t hurt – Abu Dhabi Week researchers have an incredibly low pain threshold. After putting on the compulsory shades (retro 80s style) we lay back and awaited the pain with bated breath. Luckily, the technician was prepared to stop each time we yelped.

The first part of the procedure admittedly wasn’t too bad – but certain areas did feel like we were being stapled! It helps that Silkor uses an additional cooling tube that projects cold air on to the treatment area to reduce the pain.

The aftermath, however, was just a little redness and a number of burnt hair follicles that fell off in the shower later. Following the first treatment, after ten days you’re called back for a retouch – then it’s every couple of months until the hair is permanently removed. Despite a few eye-watering moments, we’re certainly tempted to have some more ‘procedures’ at Silkor.

Why go?
The treatment is quick and fuss-free – great if you want to squeeze it into your lunch hour. It’s also a fabulously contemporary salon with a calming and professional atmosphere, great for easing any nerves.

And why not?
It can be painful, but it’s worth it in the end. The treatment doesn’t work on blonde or white hair – the darker the hair the better.
