While it’s true that the high traffic sections of Salam Street are nearing completion, the woes are not over for the longstanding Sheraton, still hard done by the inconvenient construction.
Hassle notwithstanding, Sheraton’s many food and beverage outlets have been capital favourites for decades for good reason, so when we heard The Tavern is hosting a new band, we headed over straight away. A real manly sort of hang out, The Tavern features warm, rough brick walls and low ceilings reminiscent of the same sort of British establishment you’d find in the UK.
When we arrived, we found older gentlemen in twos and threes seated comfortably in the cosy armchairs in the front lounge and passed through the sprinkling of younger blokes leaning in the middle of the room watching the footy on the TVs to take up a spot at one of the barrel tables in the back.
While there’s plenty of hearty eats on the menu – some great for nibbling, others perfect for a proper feed – we were happy enough with the crisps and peanuts that came with our drinks. On stage, Trouble was belting out an REM tune so loved that we couldn’t help but sing along.
In town from the UK for the next several months, Trouble is an easygoing duo – the intimate setting of The Tavern makes it easy for the lovely Tracy and her partner in crime Michael to chat and get to know the audience. On the night we were there, they played up to the pair of Americans paying keen attention to the sing along favourites and rock classics.
Though the set up may look simple – just two microphones, a guitar and a sound system – don’t doubt that Trouble is packing some serious vocal talent. The always bubbly Tracy especially hits the notes high and low with pure clarity. Even better they’re happy to take requests.
If you’re looking for a fun, casual night out, The Tavern is a great spot to enjoy good company, good sport and good live music. Don’t miss ladies night every Wednesday, 40/60 night every Thursday and the Wii tournament every Saturday.
