The must-have Christmas items for a first-timer at Abu Dhabi International Triathlon

One of the most exciting aspects of signing up for the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon 2012, outside of the obvious health benefits, is the exciting range of new gear and gadgets that are essential to train and race effectively, safely and within the rules of the sport.

According to certified physiotherapist Katherina Ringer, first-time entrants for the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) organised event, set to be held on Saturday 3rd March 2012, should be commencing their training schedules this month with a Christmas list full of equipment.

“Each triathlon discipline has certain essential items,” says Ringer. “A bike is obviously the big purchase, but for first-timers it should be dual-purpose - so it can be used for a variety of purposes from training to commuting.”

Munich-based Ringer is Team Abu Dhabi Triathlon’s physiotherapist and accompanies the team at training camps and races around the world.  She explains that while the equipment is important, it is the training and conditioning of your body which is the best way to achieve success.

“The best kit on the planet will not in itself be enough to propel you to the finish line; you need to build and condition your body first - your body is the most important piece of equipment you have,” said 24-year-old Ringer. “It’s imperative to base a training schedule on your level of fitness and experience, and ensure that you stretch and warm-up properly before each exercise session.”

There is also the necessary safety equipment, some of which is required by the rules of the sport, but other items to protect the body and give athletes the confidence to perform at their best.

“A helmet is an absolute must and sunglasses to keep that Abu Dhabi sun and sand out of your eyes,” says Ringer. “Swimming goggles which protect your eyes from infection and have great all-round visibility should be at the top of the shopping list, as well as a comfortable pair of running shoes that have been worn in and fitted correctly.”

“And don’t forget your tri-suit, sun screen and a sun hat,” adds Ringer.

ADTA has announced that athlete registration fees will remain frozen for the third year in a row. Athletes interested in entering should visit www.abudhabitriathlon.com and, after clicking on the ENTER NOW link, simply follow the instructions. Entry fees for the long and short distances are US $190 (AED 695) and US $130 (AED 475) respectively, while Sprint courses rates are US $75 (AED 275) for individuals and US $120 (AED 440) for a team. The fee for the team relay is US $280 (AED 1,022).
