From Karting to F1 in just three years

With this year’s Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals just days away (starts 19th November), Al Ain Raceway general manager Guy Sheffield highlights the latest success of 18-year-old Estonian Kevin Korjus since winning the Rotax Junior MAX 125 class on the Garden City track in 2007

Kevin Korjus won the Junior MAX category at the RMCGF held in Al Ain Raceway in 2007, and then was runner-up in the La Conca Grand Finals in 2008. Now Korjus has been named as one of the drivers to take part in the three day “Young Driver Test” for all F1 teams at Yas Marina Circuit next week, immediately after the Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Guy explained, “This is what karting and championships such as the Rotax MAX Challenge are all about. It’s fantastic to hear that someone who, just a few years ago was competing in a National Rotax MAX Challenge series, is now in with a chance of an F1 drive.”

Guy continued “We will be cheering Korjus on and look forward to spotting future F1 talent on the Al Ain circuit later this month.”

Korjus made his pan-European karting début in 2006, competing in the Rotax Max Euro Challenge. He finished sixth overall in the championship standings, thirteenth in the Rotax MAX Challenge Finals, and was the Estonian champion at Junior level. In 2007 Korjus won the Estonian title once again, picked up the Baltic Junior title and was a winner at the Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals held in Al Ain.

In 2008, Korjus moved to single-seaters, competing in the first Finnish Formula Renault Championship, racing for the T.T. Racing Team.  He finished all but one race on the podium: three were race victories that came in the final four races of the season, including a double at Ahvenisto. He continued with the team into the 2009 season, but then moved into the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup.
