Don’t forget about Yas

The F1 Grand Prix may be over, but Yas is more than the motor racing circuit – and there’s lots to come. So what else does Yas Island have to offer?

The Public Beach

With the creation of a beach on the south western tip of Yas Island, this area is soon to become one of the most sought after destinations in the Emirate. “Yas Island is surrounded by the beautiful waters of the Arabian Gulf,” says Nilay Ozral, director of real estate operations with Aldar Properties. “We wanted to develop a beach that would benefit the guests at our seven hotels as well as residents who do not have access to a beach locally.”

Opened temporarily during the Formula One, the 400m beach is now undergoing final modifications before its opening at the end of the year. The landscaping will feature amenities such as sun loungers, showers, toilets and kids’ play equipment. Hotel guests in the Plaza hotels will get free access, others can buy a day pass.

“The second phase of the project will be the development of a beach club, which will feature amenities including cafes and restaurants,” says Ozral. “Watch this space!”

Yas Mall

Ikea is already up and running but the other major retail development on the island will be one of the largest malls in the region, with 235,000 sq m of trading area. The centre of the mall, the Town Square, will be surrounded by stores on two levels with ‘avenues’ to smaller courtyards featuring public art.

“We are delighted that five of the UAE’s leading retail groups have all committed to Yas Mall,” says Fred Douglas, director of retail leasing for Aldar. That means 40 percent of the space is already taken.

With 10,000 covered parking spaces and its centralised location, the mall will be one of the most accessible retail centres in the area. Douglas reports that “we are on track to deliver Yas Mall as planned in the fourth quarter of 2013.”

Yas Water Park

“The Water Park will be a valuable addition to the other great attractions that already set Yas Island apart as a major leisure destination,” believes Nilay Ozral. “It will reinforce Abu Dhabi’s position as a great place to live, work and visit.”

With over 40 exciting rides, slides and other attractions in the plans, the Water Park’s design has been inspired by the Emirate’s maritime and especially its pearl-diving heritage. The Park is themed around the Lost Pearl – the story of a young Emirati girl in search of an exquisite pearl which brings prosperity to her village.

The park will be spread over more than 15 hectares and will include restaurants and shops to keep visitors entertained. According to Ozral, the Park will be open in the fourth quarter of 2012.
