Frightfully Good

We’ll admit that we’re getting a little bored of the classic 80s horror remakes. Whether it’s because we saw them the first time round or because they’ve lost some of their edge through the adaptation process – it can seem like one unnecessary remake after another.

Then came along Fright Night. Yes, this is a remake of the 1985 classic, but this is not your average, boring, schlock-horror lazy remake. For one thing, Colin Farrell is in it. For another thing, so is David Tennant.

Charlie Brewster (Yelchin) is enjoying being a member of the cool crowd, while his ex-best friend “Evil” Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) tries to warn him that his new next-door neighbour Jerry (Farrell) may be more than he appears. When it turns out that Ed is right, and disappears for his trouble, Charlie enlists the help of Peter Vincent (Tennant), a Las Vegas magician who seems to be the only man for the job: killing vampires.

Farrell and Tennant steal the show. Both are allowed to let loose and do what they do best – Farrell excelling with a delightful mix of charming and psychotic, and Tennant hamming it up just right… and with a shotgun no less.

Though not likey to change the world of horror as we know it, this film is a great way to spend a Thursday night.
