The Departed’s screenwriter William Monahan makes his directorial debut in this crime thriller, loosely based on Sunset Boulevard but set in London and starring Colin Firth as an ex-con hardman looking to go straight. Beautifully shot, the film starts well but somehow seems to use up all its energy, wit and ideas in the first half an hour before degenerating into a flurry of boring, mindless violence.
