Never Say Never is the “inspiring” true story looking at the rise of young Mr Bieber from street performer in the small town of Stratford, Ontario to internet phenomenon and global superstar culminating with a dream sold-out show at the famed Madison Square Garden shot in glorious 3D.
Directed by Jon Chu, of Step Up 3D fame, much of this biopic plays like a campaign ad, or a career highlights montage you’d see for someone’s retirement – essentially nothing more than a calculated big screen infomercial.
The film jumps awkwardly between 2D grainy archival handycam or cell-phone footage and glistening high-def 3D giving you a headache from the constant change in formats and, although there are plenty of carefully staged scenes of this “regular” kid hanging with his Canadian buddies and his extended family backstage, there’s virtually no sense of what he is actually like as a person or what kind of life he really lives.
Young fans of the Canadian singing sensation (“true Beliebers”) will doubtless lap it all up. However, if you’re over 15 and semi-intelligent you’ll want your money back. Never say never? We say never again.
