Eat Pray Love

Read, watch, enjoy

Director: Ryan Murphy
Starring: Julia Roberts, James Franco, Billy Crudup, Javier Bardem

Liz Gilbert (Roberts) had everything a modern woman is supposed to dream of having – a husband, a house, a successful career. So when she finds herself newly divorced and at a crossroads, Gilbert steps out of her comfort zone, risking everything to change her life and find direction once more.

Her search takes her to Italy, where she eats; to India, where she prays; and finally to Bali, where she loves.
Based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s bestseller, Eat Pray Love is all about self-discovery and learning to love yourself. Julia Roberts is back on top form in one of her first starring roles for a number of years and is ably supported by her leading men.

The film is beautifully shot, plunging us viscerally into the middle of every country. The only problem is, at two and a half hours, the movie is far too long.

The screen version of Eat Pray Love may not be as deep or compelling as Gilbert’s book, but nonetheless it is still a pleasurable, sometimes even prayerful, escape.
