The Back-up Plan

Labour pains

Starring: Jennifer Lopez, Alex O’Loughlin
Directed by: Alan Poul

After years of dating, Zoe (Lopez) has given up on the search for ‘Mr Right’. Determined to become a mother, she makes an appointment and decides to go it alone. Typically, she meets Stan (O'Loughlin), the man of her dreams, on the day she's artificially inseminated when they bicker over a taxi cab.

Zoe convinces herself Stan can't be ‘The One’, even though we've already figured out he is. Then, because she'd like the relationship to flourish, she wills the artificial insemination not to work. Those prayers also go unanswered and instead the fledgling couple must contemplate becoming new (and terrified) parents.

As a romantic comedy, The Back-up Plan is harmless, if not a bit on the drab and predictable side. Its true subject isn't love so much as the comedy of pregnancy and there are some very broad jokes about cravings, morning sickness and hormones running amok. The film isn’t exactly a groundbreaking work of entertainment, but it passes the time engagingly enough.

Genre: Comedy | Romance
Age Restriction: Rated PG-13 for sexual content including references, some crude material and language.
