Repo Men

organstopsRepo Men – Dir Miguel Sapochnik, starring Jude Law, Forest Whitaker, Alice Braga, Liev Schreiber

In this futuristic thriller, life has been extended and improved through sophisticated and expensive mechanical organs. The bad news: if you don't pay your bill, the supplier sends round its repo men to recover its property – with no especial concern for the survival of the client. Jude Law is Remy, top repo man who himself gets fitted with a replacement heart; he can’t handle the debt, so his former partner Jake (Forest Whitaker) is sent to find him. On the run Remy joins up with Beth (Alice Braga) to try to beat the system.

There’s lots of blood, some lust (including quite the oddest X-rated love scene) and a timely cultish feel – especially for Americans with their fears about health care reform. The first half is exciting and the main characters work well together, but then Remy starts getting too metaphysical for our own good and the film ends a tad disappointingly. Still, it’s an interesting essay in sci-fi with a difference.
