Readers' Writes - 20 May 2010

Dear Abu Dhabi Week,
Big congratulations and well done for your No 1 position with the biggest magazine in Abu Dhabi. I honestly didn’t realise that you were so widely read! I loved the idea that 81,659 copies would go around the Aldar ‘wheel’ building 67 times – did you try it?
Sebastian Freno

Editor: No, we just went all the way round once and worked it out from that.

Dear Abu Dhabi Week,
I am a teacher at Al Muna Primary School. Two of us are heading to Africa to do volunteer work in schools in Tanzania and then climbing 19,000ft up Mount Kilimanjaro. As part of our fundraising we are having an African Art day on Wednesday 26th May where all the children will undertake various art activities. Their work will then be displayed in our “Al Muna African Exhibition” where parents can give a donation for the child’s work. All money goes to orphanages in Tanzania.

Dear Abu Dhabi Week,
I read a heartbreaking story two days ago about an eight-month-old baby born with severe glaucoma. He has undergone six operations so far but will require more before his sight is restored; his parents desperately need help to pay for medical expenses in Abu Dhabi. Is there any way you could perhaps echo their story so it can be read by thousands and hopefully some generous hearts will come forward to help them anyway they can? I hope you can publish this call for help, and if you do, kindly keep my details confidential – I'd like to stay anonymous, it's the little boy who matters most. Thank you for doing such a great job!
Anon

Editor: This is indeed a sad story, especially as glaucoma is so rare in the young. Shaikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) recently performed a corneal transplantation at no charge for the baby, but ongoing treatment is required if the cornea is not to be rejected. If any reader wants to donate anything to the parents, we have the parents’ contact details.

Dear Abu Dhabi Week,
Congratulations to the Abu Dhabi Week Team for hitting nearly 82,000 copies! Concerning Mr Viktor’s query in Readers' Writes about the tailor's shop you mentioned a while ago, the name is Freddy's Tailors – tel 02 627 3777. Cheers!
Ms Valerie

Dear Abu Dhabi Week,
I have been collecting old copies of Abu Dhabi Week magazine ever since the first issue and have stacked them end on end in my kitchen. Unfortunately there were so many of them that I cannot now get out of the kitchen. Could you please come round and help?
Lucie Patterson

Editor: Sorry, we don't make house calls (except to deliver copies of the magazine).

Dear AD Week,

We are living in one of the bulidings near huge construction site - new Souk, on the corner Khalifa and Leewa street. No need to say what troubles we had for two years every day to find free parking space for our cars after the work or at any time, especially at nights. New buildings at construction site took almost all of our parking space. Fortunatelly, last year in August we got (a kind of) 'Valet parking' in unfinished underground garage under the Souk. But, this morning we got information that this service is to be stopped starting from next Thursday, leaving more than 700 (!) vehicles and their owners with no parking space. No one of staff that was providing Vlaet parking couldn't tell us where to park our cars, and traffic police is fining everyone couple of last days who leave their cars on the streets, which has been tolerated for two years. Obviously, there is no undestanding and 700 cars will be circling around the buildings...does anyone know what is happening here?
Have your say
