Young Emirati career preferences differ based on gender

Summit Career and Talent Management presents exclusive Career Interest Guide at NAJAH

Najah Exhibition

Young male Emiratis are more likely to pursue careers in IT, engineering, communications and architecture, while females choose law, social work, teaching, design and music, according to UAE-based career guidance specialists.

SUMMIT Career and Talent Management has developed an exclusive Career Interest Guide Questionnaire to gauge a student’s career interests and possible career path inclinations. The assessment tool is based on American psychologist John Holland’s five personality types which include social, investigative, artistic, realistic, and enterprising types.

The assessment tool will be available as a complimentary activity at NAJAH education, training and careers event, taking place from 18th-20th October at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), where SUMMIT will offer career guidance and counselling sessions to thousands of high school and university students.

SUMMIT has administered the newly launched tool to thousands of students from high school to university level in the UAE, with results so far indicating that young women are more social, artistic and investigative types, whereas young men are more realistic and enterprising.

While some of the career options appear to conform to gender stereotypes, others are bucking the trends with Emirati girls now choosing roles in legal work and boys opting for communications roles in public relations and marketing.
