I’ve been in Abu Dhabi for a little over two years now, this is my third Ramadan, and I never cease to be amazed and enchanted by the way the capital transforms every time the Holy month arrives.
During the day the streets are so much quieter (apart from the 3pm rush of course) and the city feels more peaceful, the frenetic hustle and bustle of daily office life drops a gear as we adjust to the reduced working hours and we finally have a reason to detox our bodies, both physically and spiritually.
Then the sun sets and Abu Dhabi bursts into life.
Wherever you decide to break your fast, iftar gatherings all over the city have an amazing vibe as locals and expats come together to share the moment (and some delicious food). Stores are open till early in the morning and the malls are alive with crowds of late night shoppers, who somehow seem happier and more friendly than at other times of the year. And, once you’ve had time to digest your iftar and maybe even walk it off, it’s time for suhour – and a chance to indulge your sweet tooth with some amazing sweets, desserts and fruit juices.
Obviously, there are a few challenges. I really miss my early morning coffee, and navigating the Ramadan rush hour after work often requires supreme levels of patience. But these are just little things.
The most important thing for me is the way Ramadan forces us all to slow down and think about things we take for granted. It is a time to reflect on what matters and those people that enrich our lives – be they friends, family or neighbours.
Ramadan Kareem, enjoy the rest of the Holy month and see you in two weeks.
