What makes Abu Dhabi special? Well, for one thing, it’s not short on projects, ideas and initiatives. And it isn’t afraid to highlight its attributes either.

Where else in the world could you read a masterplan outlining the city’s future development? And in such detail? The capital’s Plan Abu Dhabi 2030 covers the government’s vision for the city 20 years from now – literally brick by brick – but it also invites residents to contribute to the changes. A range of initiatives from the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC) allow residents to attend workshops and offer ideas for what they’d like to see.

And UPC’s Plan Abu Dhabi 2030 workshops aren’t the only way the capital’s planners are working with residents. A new survey has been started; the ‘Style Your Life’ appraisal is seeking the opinions of 11,000 people across the Emirate, to better understand how residents use existing community facilities and how regularly they utilise or visit them. The survey will also identify what additional facilities may be required both now and in the future.

Of course, a series of maps, blueprints, models and documents certainly don’t make the easiest reading. Which is why UPC has worked with Abu Dhabi Week to produce an exclusive breakdown – starting this issue – detailing just what Plan Abu Dhabi 2030 means for you.

We also like the new Al Gharbia Visitors Guidebook. Launched by the Western Region Development Council (WRDC), the free bilingual guide is available to pick up from the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (ADIHEX) at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre until 25th September. It’s an easy-to-read introduction to the region, with information on culture, wildlife and history, as well as a handy pull-out map detailing off-road guides and more. Useful stuff.

Meanwhile there’s a unique opportunity to celebrate the capital’s love of art and culture. Manarat Al Saadiyat features a never-before-seen exhibition of some of the world’s finest contemporary art; the private collection of connoisseur and dealer Larry Gagosian. It’ll be there until 24th January – and while you’re there, check out the Saadiyat exhibition in another of the Manarat’s halls. It’s another detailed look at the where the city is heading. Exciting times.
