Children’s art workshop debuts in the city

Artist

Abu Dhabi Week sat down with Shirihan Sapra, one of the artists on hand to teach kids all about art at the Colour Your Summer workshop to find out more.

Is this your first time participating in this event?
Yes it is! Although I’ve participated in other arts camps and workshops this will be my first time participating at this one.

What will you be teaching children on the day?
During the day, children will take part in two workshops, including an acrylic lesson that will focus on the basic concepts of shape, volume, and light, and a handicraft workshop where children can create artworks such as flowers, butterflies and cartoon characters using materials such as plasticine.

What can kids expect from this camp? What skills will they come away with?
Children will get to use drawing and painting as a means of thinking, communicating and expressing themselves and will leave the camp with their very own piece of art.

In your opinion, why is it important to engage children in artistic activities?
Art helps children develop a sense of personal identity and boosts their self-esteem, which is important.

Any tips for parents to help keep kids occupied this summer? What are some suggestions for keeping them creative while on summer holidays?
Parents have a crucial role in encouraging their children to engage in artistic activities and which can help shape their positive attitude towards arts. Furthermore, parents can spend time this summer painting and doing crafts with their children.

Colour Your Summer art camp will be hosted at the Ghaf Gallery on 17th July, for children aged seven to 12 years. Bookings are on a first come, first served basis. For more information visit: www.weyana.ae
