Local world wonder for Abu Dhabi |
The Environment Agency -- Abu Dhabi (EAD) has launched an international campaign to garner votes to see Bu Tinah Island become one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. The campaign, held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler’s Representative in the Western Region and Chairman of EAD, hopes to gather all-important votes before the seven new wonders are announced on 11th November 2011.
The island, located 130km west of Abu Dhabi is one of 28 sites shortlisted from an original 447 proposed locations in 224 countries. Bu Tinah Island is a core area of the Marawah Marine Biosphere Reserve, the first marine biosphere reserve in the region; the island has been chosen for its unique combination of harsh temperatures and salinity, along with its habitats and species, which include coral, natural mangroves, dolphins, ospreys, and Socotra cormorants, in addition to hawksbill sea turtles and dugongs. You can vote for Bu Tinah Island by visiting www.butinah.ae or by sending an SMS with the words ‘BU TINAH’ to 3888.
