Saadiyat Island is getting set to become the region’s premier art district with the area already attracting talent from local artists here in the capital.

Abu Dhabi Week spoke to silversmith Don Sankey to find out more about his work and experiences on Saadiyat.

“I believe I am the only freelance silversmith in the country,” explains Sankey. After approaching Manarat Al Saadiyat for space to host his silver workshops, he was then contacted to help take part in an extensive public programme related to the recently held art exhibition, ‘A History of the World in 100 Objects.’

Trained in Liverpool, Sankey hosted coin-making workshops as part of the art initiative. “I ran a series of workshops for adults, children and teenagers which focused on metal casting. We used pewter to cast coins, which were made to individual designs created on card using punches and embossed detail.”

Speaking of the cultural district, he adds: “It is already incredible, but seeing the future plans of expansion, it will become even more incredible and a real centre for art and design throughout the region. I hope I can be part of that too!”

In addition, Sankey is keen to discover more about the region’s expert crafts. “I am still endeavouring to explore the craft of ‘metalsmithing,’ which I understand the region has a deep history of. Especially the production of large vessels and bowls in copper and brass, which is actually the foundation for silversmithing today.”

Sankey hosts classes in several locations for both children and adults. To find out more visit: www.dssilversmith.com
