Secondary school students across the UAE have been challenged to take part in a cyber forensics murder mystery competition – with a trip to New York for the final stages on the line for the winners!

The inaugural who-done-it-style mystery challenge has been organised by NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) and the National Electronic Security Authority (NESA), as part of the Cyber Security Awareness Week hosted by NYU Poly – NYU’s school of engineering, applied sciences and technology.

Budding sleuths are invited to register for the competition this week and the two qualifying teams will travel to America to compete in the final showdown for the challenge on 15th November.

“It is of national importance that we educate and create cyberspace awareness amongst our youth through activities such as this,” said Saif Al Noaimi, executive director of strategic affairs at NESA. “We are looking for the next generation of cyberspace warriors that can contribute to our nation’s cyber security, and this event provides us with an ideal opportunity to scout for the best talent.”

In order to participate, students need to have a base-level understanding of cyber security tools. For learning resources and support material visit: cyfor.isis.poly.edu

On 18th September registered teams will be presented with a disk, image and supporting evidence collected in the investigation of a fictitious murder case. Participants will then have one month to use a range of cyber forensics tools to analyse the evidence and come to their own conclusions.
