A legend is born

movie01

Hercules (15+) – Starring Dwayne Johnson, John Hurt and Ian McShane, directed by Brett Ratner

The mythical tale of Hercules comes to life in this action adventure. Based on the comics by Steve Moore, this story is a less glamorous and more literal look at the legend. And because of this, the film excels where this year’s other adaptations (we’re looking at you Kellan Lutz) fell disastrously flat.

Hercules was once a heroic fighter with a beautiful family. After having his life turned upside down, the brawny star becomes a warrior for-hire, looking only for his latest paycheck.

With a team of mercenaries at his side, Hercules is promised his weight in gold if he helps the King of Thrace defeat an evil warlord and his army.

In a bit of brilliant casting, the former wrestler Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson stars as the stronger-than-normal demigod. Johnson’s hulking frame really does match the man to his legendary might. But it’s not all about the brawn; Johnson manages to bring a touch of humour and likability to the role as well.

Overall, the film is a bit of a mixed bag in terms of plot, but it definitely packs a pretty hefty punch – especially in terms of the action-packed battle scenes.

Hercules hits the big screen this Thursday, 21st August.
