Musical legends hit the stage for the concert of a lifetime

What do superstars Madonna, Cher, Lionel Richie, R. Kelly and Tina Turner have in common? They’re all coming to Abu Dhabi to perform this month – well, sort of.

The tribute acts for these superstars will come together for The Concert That Never Happened on 27th March.

The one-off gig features seasoned artists Kinisha as Tina Turner, Olu Rowe as R. Kelly, Jodie Jackson as Madonna, Hamilton Browne as Lionel Richie and Yvonne Haylen as Cher.

We catch up with some of the acts ahead of their Abu Dhabi performance.

Kinisha

Kinisha has been performing as Tina Turner since 2007. “I love her energy and determination. She overcame the odds to become the icon that she is today,” she says.

Impersonating someone as colourful as Tina – whose hits include ‘River Deep Mountain High’, ‘Proud Mary’ and ‘Private Dancer’ – is an arduous task.

“I watch videos of her performances and emulate her mannerisms. Her stamina is amazing and I swim and go to the gym to keep fit,” admits Kinisha.

Olu Rowe

R. Kelly’s 1992 hit ‘She’s Got That Vibe’ struck a chord with Olu when he was 17 years old.

“That song brought him into focus for me. There’s something about those dance moves and the video’s progressive look,” he recalls.

Today, Olu pays homage to the ‘I Believe I Can Fly’ singer by performing the tunes that inspired him to pick up the microphone.

“My favourite R. Kelly song to perform changes. But I love ‘Happy People’ because the audience joins in.”

Jodie Jackson

Like many women who grew up in the 80s, Jodie always wanted to be like Madonna.

“I launched my Madonna act in London in March 2009. Before that, I had a successful career in musical theatre in London’s West End and in Germany.”

Madonna’s constant reinvention, music and image-wise, is a challenge.

“I always have new costumes, wigs and accessories,” Jodie says.

What song would she love to perform with Madonna if she had the chance?

“‘Like a Prayer’. We could sing and dance our hearts out together. Could you post her copy of this magazine? She might honour my wish.”
