Dreading the annual hassle of renewing your car? Residents in the capital are welcoming the news of an easier method of vehicle registration in the capital.

The introduction of ‘Sahel’ e-payment machines could soon be available to government entities and private companies, making it easier and more efficient for employees to renew their registration.

The self-service machines were first made available at the Vehicles and Drivers Licensing Department to allow drivers to renew their vehicle registration, pay fines and replace lost or damaged registration cards.

Following a trial period to test the accuracy of the procedure and safety of operations, Abu Dhabi Police is ready to expand the facilities as part of its goal to introduce quality services to the public using ‘state-of-the-art technologies’.

“The ‘Sahel’ machine is the first of its kind in the Middle East,” said Colonel Anwar Abdullah Al Mulla, head of the information and communication technology (ICT) department of Abu Dhabi Police.

“Globally, it is called the self-service terminal (SST) or station. It is a fast, round-the-clock customer service terminal, equipped with sophisticated and secure electronic features designed to protect users’ data. It provides several secure methods of payment that allow customers to pay fines via credit cards; as well as to inquire about the Vehicles and Drivers Licensing Department’s various transactions.”

The self-service machine is designed to be used only after successfully completing the vehicle inspection, paying traffic violations and confirming a valid insurance policy. Users of the machine need their ID card, which will show a list of vehicles under the driver’s name. The driver can continue the process with the selected vehicle and a new registration card will be generated along with a payment receipt and duplicates of the registration certificate or renewal sticker. Users can also pay fines through the machine by inserting a traffic code and selecting the violation fees that need to be paid. The user-friendly machine is said to take users just two minutes to complete the procedure.

The touch screen ‘Sahel’ device will also feature interactive maps, weather forecast and a phone directory for local police stations.
