Join the celebrations to mark Mexico’s Independence Day
On 16th September, Mexicans around the world will celebrate their country’s Independence Day.
The event celebrates the day Miguel Hidalgo is believed to have made the cry of independence – ‘El Grito de la Independencia’ – in Dolores, Guanajuato.
Hidalgo’s army fought against the Spanish but he was captured and executed on 30th July, 1811. Mexico’s independence was not declared until much later on 28th September, 1821.
We asked Mexicans in Abu Dhabi to find out what they miss about home and how they’re planning to celebrate.
Erika Reybol is from Mexico City
“The national day in Mexico is a big party: you have everyone in the streets celebrating all day long and we dine with friends and family with traditional food while listening to ‘Mexico Lindo y Querido’ (Beautiful and Beloved Mexico).
“Apart from my family and friends, I miss the flavours, these special ingredients that you can find only in Mexico, the weather and above all, the people, always kind and smiling.”
Jesus Lemus is from Las Palmas, Zacatecas
“For me, it is a time to celebrate my roots and immerse myself in my culture with my paisanos, as my father used to say. It is also a time for me to reflect on the constant struggles that Mexico faces to this day.
“My goal is to simply have a hearty meal and socialise in a cheerful atmosphere with friends and compatriots.
“I miss my family first and foremost, street food, the warm affection of the people and the beautiful green landscapes.”
Martha Terrazas is from Mexico City
“This day reminds me of all the people who made it possible to be a nation, and at the same time, it’s an opportunity to gather family and friends to celebrate this memorable event.
“This year, as usual, we will have some parties. The main one is organised by the Mexican Embassy, where the Mexican Ambassador will perform ‘El Grito de la Independencia’, which emulates what the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla did on the night of 15th September, 1810.
“I really miss my family, friends, typical Mexican cuisine and of course the mariachi songs. Viva México!”
