The UAE is increasing its commitment to stopping all human trafficking, with amendments to federal law and a review of a USD $50,000 pledge to support for the United Nations (UN).
The UAE National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking (NCCHT) met at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abu Dhabi for its 30th meeting, reviewing previous policy and initiatives as well as formulating new concepts and reaffirming their zero-tolerance stance on human trafficking in the UAE.
The amendments to the legislation were implemented, increasing the fine
for disseminating names and photographs of victims from AED 1,000 to AED 10,000.
The legislation also requires victims to receive advice of their legal rights in a language they understand and relocation to an Ewa’a shelter.
The UAE, so far has donated more that USD $150,000 to the UN in support and continues to encourage other countries to engage, offering advice and information on their approach.
The NCCHT was established in 2007 to develop framework for legislation, promote public awareness of the crime, develop victim sensitivity training for officials and represent the UAE internationally for human trafficking.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Federal National Council Affairs, HE Dr Anwar Gargas is chairman of the committee. He said: “it reflects the maturity and awareness of these entities in working with crimes of human trafficking, which are rejected by all segments of society and country laws as it has negative effects on a person, the most important wealth on this Earth.”
Dr. Gargash said the regular meetings of the committee reflected the high level of cooperation of national institutions and the increased awareness levels in dealing with human trafficking crimes.
