Can two strangers make music in one day? An online reality show pulls the strings to find out

Some of the greatest music ever written was by duos: John Lennon and Paul McCartney of The Beatles, Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield of The Righteous Brothers and Jimmy Page and Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin, to name a few.

Inspired, a YouTube programme produced locally by White Cube Studios, debuted in February 2015. The show takes the concept of songwriting partnerships further.

While partners such as Lennon and McCartney had years of camaraderie to complement their art, the participants of Inspired neither had friendship or familiarity to jumpstart the creative process.

Elia Mssawir, studio manager of White Cube Studios, says, “The idea is to take two artists from different backgrounds, who don’t know each other, and make them collaborate to produce a song in one day.”

The challenge is for the musicians – who are randomly chosen from White Cube Studio’s network of artists – to find ways to work harmoniously despite their differences and contrasting genres.

“There will always be surprises,” adds Elia. “Imagine a rapper teaming up with an acoustic singer – we’re curious to hear what sound they can come up with.”

The collaboration is documented by video and the White Cube Studios team works behind the scenes to provide studio, technical and recording support to the artists.

“These are talented people and they love the artistry that goes with creating. Despite the initial awkwardness, they are composers and they’re ready to do it.

“The show is not a competition; it’s a platform for musicians to showcase their composition, ideas and material,” explains Elia.
