The finest cut

We were excited by the prospect of eating at The Forge as we had heard many good things on the capital’s culinary grapevine.

The Ritz-Carlton is stunning, perfectly positioned between Sheikh Zayed
Grand Mosque and the Grand Canal, and makes for an ideal destination for an evening out for those in search of style and sophistication.

The Forge’s interior is full of dark wood, glass and mirrors and the staff help create a luxurious and comfortable atmosphere.

Torn between the Canadian lobster salad or the seared duck foie gras to start, my prolonged indecision led me to opt instead for something completely different and to try the crab cake.

Served with tomato fondue, preserved lemon aioli and black olive powder, the starter was divine, especially when paired with the sommelier’s recommendation.

Our companion opted for the half-dozen tsarskaya oysters with mignonette sauce, which were described as “magnificent”. Both dishes were delightfully presented and eagerly devoured.

Venturing away from the sea for our main courses, we both opted for steaks despite great temptation from the menu attempting to lure us towards Canadian veal, the lamb chops or the duck breast.

There’s a range of premium beef from the US, Argentina, Ireland and France from 180gms to 500gms to select from, depending on your preference.

My Argentinean tenderloin was exquisite; perfectly cooked medium rare and rich in flavour. We chose a green peppercorn sauce with buttery mashed potato and garlic butter Kenya beans as accompaniments. Our guest chose the US rib eye with grilled asparagus and the duck fat roasted potatoes. There wasn’t a morsel left on his plate.

We shared our dessert before accusations of gluttony were directed our way, a frozen mango soufflé with white chocolate custard sauce and roasted sesame seeds. It was a sensational ending to a sensational meal.
