The best of the blues

On arrival at Blue Grill we were greeted and seated immediately and presented with the menu; the waiting staff remained as attentive throughout the evening.

With nine options on the starters list there was plenty of choice but it was an easy decision, the French onion soup sounded delicious with its ‘crisp pastry cheese crust’. We ordered that, followed by the Salmon Assiette and a side order of onion rings, cooked tempura style with horseradish dip.

Our guest struggled to decide which steak to have – American Angus beef, Australian grass fed, Argentinian grass fed, Australian Wagyu, 21-day dry aged Irish beef, tenderloin, striploin rib eye… Luckily our waitress Ruth was a steak connoisseur and talked him through the different options, helping him to decide on the Australian tenderloin.

Our French onion soup arrived within ten minutes and looked incredible, piping hot with a curved pastry shell topping. We wasted no time cracking open the crispy shell, the taste was slightly spicy with a hint of Parmesan. Out of the corner of our eye we saw flames flash from a frying pan as a chef flambéed meat. With a large window to the kitchen running the length of the restaurant, we were able to watch the chefs at work.

Next up was the Salmon Assiette. The generous portion was served on a large square plate that was separated into three different sections. The trio of fish included crispy salmon on a bed of asparagus risotto, a swirl of smoked salmon, and salmon confit with aubergine and tomato. We loved the variety of tasting different flavours with each forkful; the creamy asparagus risotto was also a hit. Meanwhile our guest couldn’t have been happier with his steak, and said that it was tender, juicy and paired beautifully with the whipped cheddar mash.

To finish we were presented with a large teardrop-shaped block of ice with a hollow centre. A tray of four chocolate sorbet sweets balanced in the centre. Each one had a different filling – passion fruit, apple, lemon or mint. The ice block dessert really was something special, like the rest of the meal.
