New parks planned for the city

Residents in the capital will soon be able to enjoy more of the great outdoors come September after plans for five new parks were unveiled.

To be developed in the Al Shamkha and Al Adlah regions, the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City revealed the parks are being built to offset the growing urbanisation taking place throughout the emirate.

“Developing and constructing parks, playgrounds and recreational facilities in the mainland echoes the vision of the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City of ensuring a superior quality of life and sustainable environment for the residents of Abu Dhabi,” said Rashid Al Falasi, director of parks and recreational facilities, Municipality of Abu Dhabi.

The five parks will span a total area of approximately 60,000 square metres and construction is expected to start by mid-September of this year. Four of the parks will be located in Al Shamkha and one in Al Adlah and will range in size from 7,600 to 14,000 square metres.

Each park will have a distinctive theme and will utilise sustainable design throughout. In addition to energy-efficient lighting systems and rationalising consumption of irrigation water, the parks will feature native plants in 20 to 30 percent of the total plantation area. The project is anticipated to be completed by September 2014.

In a bid to encourage a more healthy lifestyle for residents in the city, the parks will also feature mini football playgrounds, multi-purpose playgrounds, fitness and exercise equipment, fountains and shaded grilling areas.

“By providing various playgrounds for all age groups, including people with special needs, the project aims to provide a natural, recreational avenue in Al Shamkha and Al Adlah, thus providing a healthy environment and an aesthetic, modern outlook for residents of the city,” added Al Falasi.
