ENDER'S GAME

Space strikes

Ender’s Game – starring Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield and Hailee Steinfeld, directed by Gavin Hood

Based on an adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s novel of the same name, this sci-fi adventure sees children called upon to save planet Earth. In the wake of a massive attack by the Formics – an aggressive alien race – kids are deemed to be the best line of defence due to their malleable natures and dexterity. The military organisation, International Fleet, recruits a handful of youths to protect the planet from another strike.

Andrew ‘Ender’ Wiggin (Butterfield) is a brilliant and young military trainee who is chosen by Col. Graff (Ford) for his promise and intelligence. Searching for ‘the One,’ Wiggin performs well in military training exercises and after being singled out, is thrust into the very grown up world of war. The film follows the evolution of the young boy as he begins to think for himself, questions the morality of war and realises there are lasting consequences for his actions.

Hood is confident in his handling of the source material and is able to effectively showcase Ender’s rise from young trainee to commander of the army, without sacrificing the emotional and physical complexities that arise. Adults and children alike will find what there looking for with this thriller.

Ender’s Game hits the screen on Thursday 31st October.
