Police have fined more than 52,000 people across Abu Dhabi during the first half of the year for failing to wear a seatbelt while driving.

Officers are again urging motorists to buckle up to help prevent serious injuries and fatalities on the roads.

Colonel Khamis Ishaq Mohammed, deputy director of the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate, said: “The Traffic and Patrols Directorate issued 52,324 violations to individuals for failure to fasten seatbelts in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi during the period between 1st January to 31st July. The goal of issuing these fines, whether for the driver or passengers, is to maintain their safety and prevent injuries and deaths that would otherwise result from failure to fasten their belts.”

He urged motorists to fasten their seatbelts while driving and advised all passengers to use them regardless of their travelling distance. He reiterated how effective seatbelts are vital in protecting drivers and passengers during collisions from serious injury and death.

Failure to fasten the belts can result in fines of up to 400 dirhams in addition to four traffic points.

Police also stressed the importance of youngsters being correctly restrained in child seats while travelling in the back seat of a vehicle, saying some parents still foolishly allow their children to move around freely inside the car.
