An explosive new motorsport comes to Yas Marina Circuit as the International Drag Racing Festival makes its debut on the 19th and
20th March.

The inaugural drag racing festival is the first drag racing event to take place at the recently opened Drag Racing Centre and will feature the region’s top drag race teams competing for prize money totalling AED 375,000. Over 100 race cars and motorcycles will be on display in a variety of race categories led by the Pro Mods – highly modified vehicles based on American muscle cars with close to 1,700 horsepower.

There will be a total of eight different classes racing during the two-day event including the Pro Mods, Super Comp dragsters, Superstreet and Pro bikes in addition to a demonstration from the real monsters – Yas Drag Racing Centre’s Top Fuel dragsters.

The Top Fuel dragsters have 8,000 horsepower (equivalent to 10 F1 engines) and can accelerate from zero to over 500 kph in less than four seconds with flames shooting two and a half metres high out of the exhaust. Top Fuel dragsters are new to the UAE and Yas Marina Circuit have purchased two of these ground-pounding machines to form the core of its drag racecar stable.

The NHRA, the governing body for drag racing in the United States, has recognised the Yas Drag Racing Centre as the first track outside the USA as an NHRA worldwide racing network. Situated adjacent to the circuit’s Formula 1 track, the centre has two grandstands with a seating capacity of 5,000 and houses its own race control, hospitality and paddock area.

Richard Cregan, CEO of Yas Marina Circuit, said “This new world class sporting facility will provide the motorsports enthusiasts in the UAE and the region – especially young people – with an opportunity to exert their passion for drag racing within a safe and controlled environment.”

Tickets are still available priced at AED 50 per day for general admission; complimentary parking at Yas Marina Circuit is included and children 12 and under enter free of charge. Tickets for The Majlis are priced at AED 350 and include a non-reserved grandstand seat in the VIP area, access to hospitality pavilion with unlimited mezzes and beverages, private viewing terrace behind the dragstrip and VIP parking.
