Man of Steel (PG 13)

kryptonfactor

Starring Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, and Michael Shannon, directed by Zack Snyder

So the Superman story gets another outing. But after the disappointment of 2006′s over-earnest Superman Returns,  the DC Comics’ stable will be hoping Snyder’s re-reboot will be more Dark Knight than Green Lantern.

With Snyder being the director who brought graphic novel classics such as Watchman and 300 to the big screen with such attention to detail, he was a safe bet to do the cape-clad superhero from Krypton justice, and Man of Steel does not disappoint.

The story is well-worn and ingrained into pop-culture through its many iterations; Clark Kent (Cavill), is the only survivor of the planet Krypton and, after crash landing on Earth is adopted by a rural Kansas couple (Diane Lane and Kevin Costner).

As the boy grows up he starts working as a journalist in Metropolis, and begins to develop feelings for intrepid reporter Lois Lane (Adams), but as he struggles to come to terms with his extraordinary superpowers, his sense of responsibility to protect his adopted planet throw him into conflict with the villainous General Zod (Shannon).

Snyder adopts the grittier tone of Christopher Nolan’s ultra-successful Dark Knight trilogy to great effect, with the epic scale of the action scenes adding to the phenomenal spectacle. In the latest superhero face-off between DC and rival company Marvel, the Man of Steel just landed a significant POW! on Iron Man’s metal chin…

Man of Steel flies into cinemas this Thursday 13th June, 2013.
