Abu Dhabi sowed the seeds for an even greener city this week by raising awareness of plant conservation and sustainability efforts with the start of Plantation Week.
The 34th edition of the awareness campaign, run by Abu Dhabi City Municipality, hopes yet again to foster a culture of environmental preservation, and also increase awareness of the capital’s parks, gardens and recreational facilities.
HE Khalifa Mohammed Al Mazroui, general manager of Abu Dhabi City Municipality, launched this year’s initiative, held under the theme ‘Together we plant the UAE’, on 3rd March, with a ceremony that included poetry, plantings and a performance of a short play by female students.
The event aims to educate the community on the importance of plantation and the participation of various community segments in fostering the tradition of growing plants and embedding agricultural values in the conscience of youngsters. It also seeks
to educate the general public on the role of the municipalities of the UAE in providing parks and recreational facilities to the citizens and residents.
“The landscaping and greening projects have contributed to making Abu Dhabi one of the most beautiful GCC cities, characterised by wide green areas in its streets, beaches and beautiful parks in neighbourhoods, which have given it a unique identity of urban balance,” said Al Mazroui.
