Crusading for cat care

Four students in Abu Dhabi are standing together for four-legged friends and have raised over AED 4,000 for animal welfare groups in the capital.

Initiated by Emirates National School girls’ campus, four Grade 5 students – Mzoun Al Kaabi, Rodha Al Khazeeri, Hamda Al Quabaisi and Sheikha Aladwani – used their final exhibition project to focus on animal welfare, particularly stray felines in the capital.

After a stray cat set up home on the school campus, the girls took charge by getting in touch with animal welfare organisation Sandy Paws for advice. Nicknamed ‘Jerry,’ the cat was taken to the vet after receiving an infection and was discovered to be microchipped, eventually being reunited with his owner.

The girls held a variety of  activities such as a pet selfie wall photo display, dress down day, and bake sale. Students participating in the activities donated AED 5 to the initiative.

“The whole school has supported this cause. It may have been a few students and staff that lead initiatives, but through participation and donations everyone has helped to raise awareness of the many stray cats in Abu Dhabi,” said Tamara Donnelly, ENS English coordinator.

The school plans on hosting a food drive next month, in order to raise more awareness and funds for strays in the city. Donations have been given to Animal Action Abu Dhabi and Sandy Paws.
