No change at the top

The second half of the UFL season kicked off last weekend and saw normal service resumed with three of Abu Dhabi’s four teams in action.

League leaders Al Jazira emerged victorious 2-1 against Al Shabab, avenging the defeat a week ago in the semi-final of the President’s Cup. Subait Khater made amends for his penalty miss a week earlier by notching the first goal before Ebrahim Diaky scored the decisive second.

Al Ain comfortably saw off Al Nasr 2-0 away from home, Ali Al Waheebi and Emerson grabbing the goals. Meanwhile, Bani Yas continued their unexpectedly impressive form with a 2-1 away win over Al Wasl. Senegalese striker Andre Senghor and Omani international Fouzi Basheer were on the score sheet.

Second place Al Wahda will face Al Ahli in a postponed match on Wednesday. The match had to be rescheduled as Al Wahda took on Al Karamah of Syria in the first round of preliminary qualifications for the AFC Champions League. A goal from left wing-back Mahmoud Khamis in the 71st minute secured victory for Al Wahda and they progress to the second round of preliminary qualification against Indian club Churchill Brothers.

That is to be played on Saturday, with the winners heading through to the group stages of the AFC Champions League. Al Ahli, Al Jazira and Al Ain have already qualified directly for the group stages of this tournament.
