Abu Dhabi teams fall at final hurdle

A disappointing weekend for the capital’s football teams saw both Al Jazira and Al Wahda eliminated from the President’s Cup at the semi-final stage.

Al Wahda were the first to go after losing 1-0 to an injury-time goal from Emirates’ Nabil Dawoodi on Friday at Zayed Sports City.

“They scored from the only chance they got, whereas we controlled the game but couldn’t score in the 90 minutes,” said a frustrated Josef Hickersberger, coach of Al Wahda.

And there was more drama to come on Saturday when league leaders Al Jazira went down 3-0 in a penalty shootout to Al Shabab when their semi-final ended scoreless after extra-time at the Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium.

Al Jazira coach Abel Braga said he was “deeply hurt” by his team’s shock exit. “We made too many mistakes in this game – it was one of those days when nothing went right for us,” he said.
